MRP, sale price and 'up to 80% off' explained. Five checks to know if an online fashion discount in India is real.

Every Indian shopping site shouts discounts. Some are real, many aren't. Here's how to tell, in under a minute.

  1. 1Find the MRP: by law, the maximum retail price is printed on the product. The discount should be measured against it.
  2. 2Check the same product elsewhere: if three stores sell it at the 'sale' price, that is simply its price.
  3. 3Be careful with 'up to': 'up to 70% off' usually means a few items at 70% and most at 10–20%.
  4. 4Watch permanent sales: a product that's 80% off every month never really cost the MRP.
  5. 5Add delivery and returns: a cheaper price with paid returns can cost more in the end.
